This month I’m giving the EAL Digest a try – thanks Pete for trusting me with it!
Let’s see what’s new in the world of EAL:
New releases
Drumroll, please! Our book, Supporting EAL Learners: Strategies for Inclusion has been published. It is aimed at subject teachers and class teachers working with upper primary and secondary EAL learners. We hope that the strategies in the book help teachers support all of their learners more effectively. We’d love to hear your opinion if you read it!
New EAL community
Heddle EAL has just soft-launched their website. They are promising a community for EALers around the world. Samples are yet to be released and we can’t wait to see their offer!
CPD
Twinkle have just advertised their upcoming TeachMeets and there are a couple that might be of interest to the EAL community.
EAL Leads: Make a Positive Start to the Year with Dr Robert Sharples: strategies for a strong start, new EAL resources, and the promotion of inclusive environments are on the menu.
New to Subject Leadership might seem less relevant at first, but when I became an EAL Leader, I got a lot out of these middle leadership sessions. Might be worth attending for new EAL leaders.
This next one is unfortunately only available to FOBISIA member schools, but it looks like a worthwhile session if you have access. Inclusive teaching: Best Practices for International Schools.
Translanguaging: Using Students’ Own Languages to Enhance Learning (Webinar) by the Bell Foundation for International School Practitioners.
Check out Usoa Sol’s webinar on Kagan’s cooperative learning strategies. In the Elementary School, we use cooperative learning strategies and one aspect that works well for EAL learners is having clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
Resources
The Bell Foundation have published some new resources for different key stages and subject areas.
Twinkl EAL has lots for the start of the year/term, transitions, and more.
I highly recommened following Anna Bejshovcova on LinkedIn, especially if you are a KS1 EALer. She shares great practical ideas and her reflections are super insightful!
Blog posts
Great blog on the importance of wait time. The section on co-teaching is especially useful for in-class support.
Vanesa Polastri’s blog about how she uses indigenous identities in literature in EAL lessons is definitely worth a read too.
Podcasts
Khanh-Duc Kutting will interview Patrick de Boer on Monday, 9 September all things CLIL. Sounds to be an interesting conversation.
